I am completely aware that some don’t have the option of getting someone to watch the kids so they can runaway. It’s a big reason we chose NOT to move away from our parents. But my parents did not have the option. HOWEVER, they also didn’t take the options that were in front of them 
Look to all your relatives you trust. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, who is your family that you talk to on a regular basis?
Neighbors are golden. We are blessed with a couple of neighbors that our daughter is best friends with their daughters. Believe me, it hasn’t been easy as the girls have grown up. We have used them for some quick get-aways over the years. One neighbor will also watch the dogs and then I can get the girls to come over and play with the dogs as well. 
If all else fails, there is always an early bedtime. Wake the kids up early and don’t let them nap if you need to. Put them to bed an hour or more early. Make some dinner and eat in bed as if you are in a hotel room. You can shut the door and still be there for emergencies.
There is no excuse for not taking a vacation, it’s all about some planning. You may even be able to have a younger niece or nephew spend the night and keep and eye on the kids while you lock yourself away.
Taking the time for your relationship is important and will renew everything in your life if you make it a focus. You’ll be a better wife and especially a better Mom if you step away and remember a little of that young woman who was silly before all the responsibilities.

Absolutely true, you should not deprive yourselves of a great vacation. Planning is key. In my case, I usually call my niece to babysit. It is more cost-efficient than hiring a nanny although I had to take time and teach her the basics. You must also choose the person who really loves kids so the training wouldn’t be as hard.
